My favorite horror movies!

For me a good horror movie has a combination of these criteria: is it scary, is it a good movie, is it fun and how good are the characters and story -- some of these don't have all of them, I like each for a different reason but it is what I often base my opinions on! Horror is so subjective though so I understand these may not be for everyone, still - enjoy!

Skinamarink

Starting this controversially already haha. This movie is definitely not for everyone and the opinions on it are very divisive but I LOVED it! It was absolutely horrifying to the point that by the end of the movie I was just begging for the tension to stop. Haven't been this scared by something in a longg time and I feel like it's an absolute gem. It's also beautiful artistically, even the premise is haunting, it's unique, it's a bit of an arthouse piece, the sound design is so well made, the visuals are so fun I mean WOW. Extremely creative movie in my opinion that isn't afraid of doing something very different than what's mainstream,

To let this movie capture you fully you should definitely allow it to do that. If you go in with a "how can this be scary" mindset it won't really work in my opinion. You have to let your imagination run wild, dive back into your childhood and remember what it felt like to be scared of the dark. Watch it alone, watch it in the dark and wear headphones. An incredible showcase of modern horror.

Hereditary

Here's the first Ari Aster movie on this list and dare I say his best one. Again this film is absolutely horrifying, effective jumpscares and just this atmosphere that fills you with so much dread. There's also the topics of grief and family dynamics that in my opinion is the source of horror much more than the demonic part of the story. The acting is also one of the strongest aspects. It's visceral, it's raw, it's horrifying. This only intensifies the extremely engaging and well-written characters. They are sympathetic yet flawed and feel very real in a way. Again a movie where I was glued to the screen and loving every second.

This is a very easy movie for me to recommend because in general I don't have many complains about it. A wild ride with incredible visuals and score, for me a must watch in the genre.

Midsommar

Ari Aster once again, this time I don't love the movie as much but it's still a very good one. Here I think I wasn't as scared but the rest of the movie compensates for that with other things like visuals and interesting characters. I always liked how sunny and bright this movie is in comparison to what most people associate with horror. Some of the most haunting scenes happen in bright daylight. I also love the floral motifs, that's just a me thing, and also again the acting! Both from the main characters but also the background characters that are a part of the cult. So many great scenes.

So while not as strong as Hereditary in my opinion, also a great watch. I do think that the ending is a bit... lacking, I don't know maybe that's just personal preference but the rest is a wild, psychological ride with an eerie atmosphere. Worth checking out!
